API Security Risks in Production
Common API security risks that show up in production systems and the checks that catch them early.

Why APIs need their own attention
APIs expose application logic and data directly. A weakness that is hidden behind a web page is often reachable by anyone who can send a request.
Risks to check first
- Broken access control: one user can read or change another user's records by changing an identifier.
- Weak authentication: missing or easily guessed tokens, or tokens that never expire.
- Excessive data in responses: the API returns more fields than the screen needs.
- No rate limits: attackers can guess passwords or scrape data at speed.
- Old or undocumented endpoints: test and legacy routes that nobody monitors.
What to do
List every endpoint, test access control for each role, and review what each response returns. Repeat after major releases.
See our penetration testing service for how we test APIs.
